Two charged with illegal possession of imported milk powder

Two businessmen arrested in December following crackdowns targeting the influx of cheap uncustomed dairy products in the Kenyan market were today charged before a Mombasa law court with illegally being in possession of imported powdered milk.

Yahya Rashid Hassan and Mohamed Abdullahi Nure appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Hon. Vincent Adet where they denied a count of being in possession of 82 tins of red cow powder milk, anchor powder milk and first powder milk all valued at KShs 109,331 which they knew or ought to have reasonably known to be uncustomed.

The two were arrested on the 10th day of December 2019 at Bondeni area in Mvita Sub County within Mombasa County by the Multi Agency Team following the intensified crackdown on those smuggling and dumping of illicit goods in the local market.

The two accused persons also denied a second count of contravening regulations for importation of dairy produce. The Court heard on the 10th day of December 2019, at Britco shop situated along Abdinazir road in Bondeni area in Mvita Sub-county within Mombasa County, the accused persons failed to comply with a disclosure notice of source of supply for the said dairy produce which way in contravention with the law.

The court released them on a bond of KShs 100,000 with an alternative bail of KShs 50,000. The case will be mentioned on 5th February 2019.
