Three charged with KShs. 4.5 M tax evasion and manufacture of illegal liquor

Three people were today charged at the Milimani Law Courts with illegal manufacture of excisable goods and possession of counterfeit excise duty stamps with duty value of Kshs. 4.5 million.

The three; Margaret Waithera Kariuki, Samuel Kihara Wakaba and Peter Mwangi Gichuhi were charged on three counts. The particular charges are of possession of counterfeit excise duty stamps and illegal manufacturing of excisable goods with an excise duty valued at Kshs. 4.5 million.

The three were arrested in an operation aimed at combatting unlicensed manufacture of illicit brews disguised as genuine products. They were found with 177 cartons containing 205ml of Turkeys Pioneer Vodka affixed with counterfeit excise duty stamps and 190 pieces of vodka Blue 250ml. They were also found in possession of one (1) reel of counterfeit excise duty stamps containing 24, 000 stamps.

The three accused persons were arrested on Saturday, July 20th, 2019 at Baraka Mowlem Business Centre in Dandora within Nairobi County.

They all denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Hon. Kennedy Cheruiyot and were released on Kshs. 1 Million bond or alternative cash bail of Kshs. 500,000. The court is set to hear the case on 20th August, 2019.
