Three charged with smuggling ethanol worth KShs.10 million tax

 

A clearing agent, driver and turnboy have been arraigned before Bungoma Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Hon. Charles Mutai to face charges of conveying uncustomed ethanol with a dutiable value of KShs 10,291,759.

Police officers acting on intelligence intercepted motor vehicle registration no. KCJ 001H/ZE1200 on 3rd June, 2021 along Kamukuywa-Webuye Junction. Upon conducting an inspection, 117 drums of ethanol were recovered aboard the motor vehicle which had been declared as an empty truck by the customs agent Hedwig Okama Emomeri. Nicholas Ndavwa Musyoki and Muthingu Maluki who were aboard the motor vehicle were subsequently arrested.

KRA in collaboration with other government agencies, continues to be vigilant to curb trade on illicit goods and other transnational economic crimes. Taxpayers are encouraged to pay their taxes and remain compliant with tax laws in order to avoid punitive enforcement measures including prosecution and forfeiture of vehicles used in commission of such offences.
