PS National Treasury Calls on the Business Community to Proactively Pay Taxes and Collaborate to Champion Compliance Initiatives

The Principal Secretary (PS) for the National Treasury and Economic Planning Dr. Chris Kiptoo, CBS, has called on the business community to proactively pay their
correct share of taxes and champion compliance initiatives to enable the government provide critical services and development programs.

The PS was speaking during a stakeholder engagement event bringing together the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Eldoret Business Association , where he
reiterated the Government’s commitment to revenue driven fiscal allocation. “I want to encourage everyone to be patriotic and pay their correct share of taxes; this will create a fair and competitive business environment, grow our economy and enable us to be self-reliant” he said.

The Commissioner General Mr. Humphrey Wattanga in his remarks said that KRA has been implementing a more facilitative service-focused approach in tax collection
while making it easy to pay taxes. “We are keen to get honest feedback from the Business Community to enable us improve our service offering to taxpayers,” he said. He reiterated KRA’s commitment to collaborate with stakeholders in implementing compliance support programs that respond to taxpayers’ unique needs. “I want to appeal to all stakeholders to continue engaging with us, as we work collectively to better serve you. We will enhance our focus on taxpayer education and staff integrity. We will also collaborate to ensure, with your support, the Tax Amnesty and eTIMS programs successfully respond to our revenue goals.” he said. Mr. Wattanga was accompanied by the Commissioner for Domestic Taxes, Mrs. Rispah Simiyu, EBS among other senior staff.

The Chairman of the Eldoret Business Association, Mr. Jackson Kiprono welcomed the rallying call by the PS and committed to continuously engage with KRA to resolve various taxation challenges affecting them and strengthen tax compliance. His comments were echoed by the President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Dr. Erick Rutto, who committed to work with all business associations to advocate for quality policy proposals that will enhance domestic resource mobilization and spur Kenya’s economic growth.

KRA is currently implementing country-wide stakeholder engagement forums to enhance tax literacy and promote goodwill for payment of taxes.
