KESRA launches inaugural research conference

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) recently launched its inaugural Kenya School of Revenue Administration (KESRA) Research Conference at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies, Nairobi.

The Research conference themed "Taxation in a Digitized Economy" was part of the Fourth Annual Tax Summit that kicked off on 15th October 2018 and ended on 17th October 2018. The focus of this year?s research conference focused on the emerging digital frontiers and their implications on tax administration.

Speaking during the launch Ag. Head of KESRA Dr. Fred Mugambi emphasised the need to leverage on technology in tax administration to enhance tax collection.

?As we are all aware, this theme could not be more timely because we live in an era where things are rapidly changing. New gadgets, better technology and innovation are the order of the day and so we must embrace change and ride the tide in tax administration,? Dr Mugambi said.

As is widely recognised, digitalisation has had profound impact on the economy, disrupting operations including tax administration. The conference explored responses to challenges raised by the digitisation of the economy at global level.

Dr Mugambi said that the conference was a runner-up for the upcoming Africa Tax Research Network Forum to be held in 2022. The African Tax Conference will be hosted by KRA.

During the conference, the Chairman of ICT Standing Committee Prof Bitange Ndemo spoke about the need for government to explore taxation of over the top (OTT) service providers and other emerging new technologies that have no ground offices in Kenya and are not locally regulated.

The conference brought together local and foreign policymakers, scholars, practitioners, experts, academicians, and researchers to share contemporary thoughts in the field of tax, Customs, fiscal policy and management, as well as public finance and related areas in a lively mix of speeches, panel discussions and interviews.
